The Arctic Blank Check: Militarization Without Meaningful Consultation

A cornerstone of Carney’s national security agenda is the $40 billion plan to defend Canada’s North, which includes building new Forward Operating Locations and Arctic infrastructure. However, Northern and Indigenous leaders have raised alarms that this massive militarization is occurring with virtually no meaningful consultation. Treating the Arctic as a geopolitical chessboard, the administration has bypassed the very Inuit communities who actually hold sovereignty over the land.
